SUMMARY:Exploring Smithville: Building the Canal
DESCRIPTION:When the precursor to today’s Intracoastal Waterway was under construction\, there was a bustle of activity in Smithville – from houses\, to logging and sawmill operations\, and a loading dock. Explore this area today and see the evidence of these activities and the people who lived and worked here on Cat Island. This trip will require a good bit of walking\, as well as the possibility of some muddy areas. Wear comfortable footwear that can get a little wet. Participants should be prepared to cross the Intracoastal Waterway via pontoon boat\, as well as walking on uneven\, possibly moist\, ground. Bring a bag lunch and drink. Trips start at 10:00 and run until approximately 2:00.
