SUMMARY:Exploring Smithville: Building the Canal
DESCRIPTION:When the precursor to today’s Intracoastal Waterway was under construction\, there was a bustle of activity in Smithville – from houses\, to logging and sawmill operations\, and a loading dock. Explore this area today and see the evidence of these activities and the people who lived and worked here on Cat Island. This trip will require a good bit of walking\, as well as the possibility of some muddy areas. Wear comfortable footwear that can get a little wet. Participants should be prepared to cross the Intracoastal Waterway via pontoon boat\, as well as walking on uneven\, possibly moist\, ground. Bring a bag lunch and drink. Trips start at 10:00 and run until approximately 2:00.

SUMMARY:Birding and Wildlife Watching for Kids!
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a budding naturalist\, birder\, or photographer in your family? This trip is just for them! Kids and parents will join SCDNR staff on a special kid-friendly version of our regular birding and wildlife photography trip. All skill levels are welcome – come and learn photography basics (camera or cell phone photography)\, how to use binoculars\, identify birds\, wildlife\, and more! All children must be accompanied by an adult. This trip requires little walking\, but participants will need to navigate 2 floating docks and a pontoon boat to cross the Intracoastal Waterway\, as well as a few steps onto the tour bus.
