Exploring Smithville: Building the Canal

January 15 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

When the precursor to today’s Intracoastal Waterway was under construction, there was a bustle of activity in Smithville – from houses, to logging and sawmill operations, and a loading dock.Explore this area today and see the evidence of these activities and the people who lived and worked here on Cat Island. This trip will require a good bit of walking, as well as the possibility of some muddy areas. Wear comfortable footwear that can get a little wet. Participants should be prepared to cross the Intracoastal Waterway via pontoon boat, as well as walking on uneven, possibly moist, ground. Bring a bag lunch and drink. Trips start at 10:00 and run until approximately 2:00.
