Public access to the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center is restricted to ensure ecological conservation and protection of the wildlife sanctuary. Special educational field trips are offered on a regular basis by appointment only.

To check the availability of the educational field trips listed below and make a reservation, please contact the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center office by email at WhamP@DNR.SC.GOV, by phone at 843-546-6814 between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm or leave a message on the answering machine. Reservations are required for all educational field trips and there is no charge involved. Weekly Educational Field Trips typically run in most weather conditions but other events may be weather dependent.

Fall Forest Walk (Oak Ridge)

November 25 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Experience the changing of seasons on a hike through Oak Ridge, one of Cat Island’s hardwood forests, ending with a view of Winyah Bay. The ecology and history of the forest will be discussed along the way, including a glimpse of carnivorous Pitcher Plants before they go dormant for the winter. This program includes a leisurely hike through the forest that does include some hills and uneven ground. Participants should be prepared to cross the Intracoastal Waterway via pontoon boat, as well as around 3 miles of walking. Bring a bag lunch and drink. Trips start at 10:00 and run until approximately 2:00.
